iPad is a great device for watching movies. The following paragraphs are all about how to copy movies to iPad in different ways, no matter supported video or unsupported videos in AVI, WMV, FLV, MKV, AVCHD, MPG, etc.. Now just get some popcorn and discover the transferring process!  (Also learn ways to put Movies from Computer to iPhone)

Tip: Before getting started, please take note that not all video files can be imported into iTunes library for sync to your iPad. If the video files are incompatible with iTunes or iPad, you can choose to convert them into compatible formats first or directly transfer them to iPad for conversion and playback freely.

How to transfer videos from PC or Mac to iPad via iTunes:

Copying videos to your iPad should be easy. Yes, we’re going to need iTunes and yes, it might take almost the same time that it takes to sync your iPad with iTunes but no, it’s not going to be tough. In fact, if you can drag-and-drop, you can do this seamlessly.

Step 1: Connect your iPad to your PC or Mac

Step 2: Open iTunes if it doesn’t fire up automatically

Step 3: Select your connected iPad from the list of devices. (You’ll find this on top-right or on the sidebar if it’s enabled. You can enable the sidebar from the View menu option.

Step 4: Under the device, you have an option called Movies. Select this. (If you’ve got videos on the iPad already, they’ll be shown as a list)

Step 5: Now all you have to do is drag and drop the video files that you want to copy. To make this easy, have the folder containing the video file ready, have iTunes open in the background and just drag-and-drop the file from the folder into the iTunes window.

Step 6: You should now see a progress bar that will indicate how long it will take to copy the file. Got short videos? Fast. Full-length movies? That’ll take a little time.

Note: Apple iTunes 12 is different than what most users are used to. Learning how to transfer photos to the iPad can be a daunting task for those who are used to the old way of doing things. Here’s how it’s done.

Connect the device to your computer using a USB cable.

A button will appear toward the upper-left part of the screen. Select it to access the settings on the device.

Select the “Photos” option on the left sidebar.

Check the “Sync Photos from” option, then choose to sync “All folders” or “Selected folders”. You can also select the “Include videos” check box to sync your personal videos. If you choose the “Selected folders” option, you will be give the option to check the folders you want to sync to the device.

Click the “Done” button, then click “Apply”. iTunes will then transfer your photos over to your Apple device.

Transfer Video Files to iPad with third-party app

One free app which has excellent reviews at the moment is PlayerXtreme Media Player by PentaLoop. This lets you transfer videos by Wi-Fi, but for speed and reliability we’ll be using a USB cable for this guide. Following the guide below to learn how to use it.

Step 1. Connect your iPad to a computer with a recent version of iTunes (try to use the latest version if possible). iTunes should launch automatically and your iPad will show up on the left-hand side

Step 2. Click on the icon representing your iPad and then click on Apps in the menu on the left. Scroll down until you see the File Sharing section.

Step 3. Scroll down the list if necessary and click on the appropriate video app, in this case we’ll choose PlayerXtreme. On the right is a list of the files: it’s currently blank as we haven’t yet copied any videos.

Step 4. Click the Add File… button and navigate to the video you want to put on your iPad. Select one or more and click Open at the bottom of the dialog box. Don’t forget to select any subtitle files which go with the videos.

The films will start copying to your iPad – a progress bar is shown in the pane at the top of iTunes.

Once they’re transferred, you can disconnect your iPad, launch PlayerXtreme (or whichever video playback app you’re using) and the videos will be there, ready to watch.

Bear in mind that playing video formats which aren’t natively supported by iOS will use up the battery faster unless the app can use hardware acceleration (which PlayerXtreme can).

How to put films on an iPad: Use a video downloader app

If you don’t want to have to connect your iPad to a computer running iTunes, there are other ways to get films onto your iPad. One is to install a video downloader app, such as Video Downloader Lite. Using the app’s built-in web browser you can head to YouTube or another video streaming site and find a video you want to watch.

When it starts playing, a pop-up window should appear giving you the option to download or save the video. You might have to type in a name for it, or it might automatically take the name from the web page.

How to put films on an iPad: catch-up TV

BBC iPlayer and the All 4 app (Chanel 4) both allow you to download TV shows (including films) to your iPad. iPlayer now gives you 30 days to watch stuff you download, while with All 4 it depends on when the show was broadcast as to how long you have before the download expires. Neither ITV Player nor Demand 5 allow you to download shows.

How to put films on an iPad: Buy or rent from iTunes, Google Play Movies and TV or another service

If you launch the iTunes store on your iPad, then tap on Films at the bottom, you’ll find a great selection of the latest movies available to rent or buy.

Although you can stream the films immediately, a bought or rented film will also be downloaded to your iPad so you can watch it without an internet connection.

Finally, if you prefer to stick with the built-in Videos app and want to put films from your computer onto your iPad, you’ll need to use the computer you use to sync and backup your iPad.

When your iPad appears at the top of iTunes (after connecting it with a USB cable or using Wi-Fi sync), click on the Films tab and you will see a list of all the films you’ve imported into your iTunes library. Bear in mind that they may appear in the TV Programmes tab if they’ve been incorrectly tagged. This is also true of TV Shows which are wrongly tagged as Films.

Tick the Sync Films box, then tick the films you want to add to your iPad from the list. Alternatively, tick the box next to “Automatically include all films”, and use the drop-down menu to choose an option from the list such as ‘all unwatched’.

You can install the Google Play Movies and TV app if you prefer and buy or rent videos that way. Unfortunately, Netflix and Amazon’s streaming video services don’t let you download content to watch offline… yet.

Additional Tip: How to transfer and put unsupported movies on iPad

In fact, it’s easy to copy files to iPad via iTunes only if you’ve confirmed the following, (taking video for example):

  • The file format is compatible with iPad (See the detailed requirements of iPad)
  • The file should be DRM-free or be purchased on iTunes store
  • The file is already on your PC(or Mac).

If your video files are stored on your hard drive or camera etc., you need to copy the video to your computer first and make sure the format of your video is supported.

And when you encounter problems stating that the file couldn’t be copied, it means there’s a problem with the file format. The iPad understands a few formats for video like MP4, MOV or M4V. You can instll a Video player on the iPad for playing more video formats. Or you’ll need to change the format of the videos to an iPad compatible format before copying it.

To fulfill diversity video conversion confounding, you need a smart video converter for iPad. Here iFastime Video Converter Ultimate is specific designed for iPad series flagship to convert videos to iPad Mini/2/3, iPad Air/2, iPad 3, iPad 4 compatible format from Blu-ray, DVD and all popular HD videos MKV, M2TS, MTS, TS, AVCHD and general videos MP4, MOV, FLV, WMV, AVI, etc.. With this customized Galaxy Note 3 video conversion tool, you can watch all your favorite videos and even your recorded video clips by carrying around this handset. So you may have to convert AVI to iTunes-compatible format for sycing with iPad Air, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus or other iDevces without any hassle. You probably already have the free and open-source VLC media player installed, so why bother downloading another application? VLC is packed with hidden features, and a video converter is one of them. Yes, you can use VLC to convert videos.

To get started on Windows, click the Media menu and select Convert/Save. On a Mac, click the File menu and select Convert/Stream.

Add the media file you want to convert, ensure the profile is set to Video – H.264 + MP3 (MP4), and save the output to a file. You can also customize the conversion profile settings if you like, but this isn’t necessary.
